Reno’s VA Hospital: Ready For Coronavirus

in Local News

The coronavirus caught most everyone off guard, and our local VA Medical Center wasn't alone. There was a lot of hustle. Dr. Sara Ashraf, Chief of Medicine at the Reno VA Medical Center told me, “The focus was outpatients first of all, what if these patients come in? But then we quickly changed our focus to inpatient.”

138 patients reside inside. Thousands of others come in for appointments and medical needs. Everyone, including staff, is screened… with name tags showing when they were last questioned. In waiting rooms, caution tape is strung from chair to chair to force social distancing.

in Local News

Group meetings, or daily conferences, have quickly gone virtual. This includes recovery groups like Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous. According to the Northern Nevada Intergroup of Alcoholics Anonymous, there are more than 300 meetings held weekly. Since Nevada has closed doors to non-essential businesses, some members are having had a hard time adjusting.

“It's more of a technological adjustment,”says a member. “We have all age groups, from young to old, and it can be difficult for those who don't have smart phones, or any access to the internet at all.”

Chicken Sandwiches to Reno’s Front Line

in Local News

Hundreds of chicken sandwiches and gallons of sweet tea, all for medical workers in Reno and Sparks. As one nurse called it, “chicken sandwich courtesy”. The point man behind the free chicken for caretakers is Nevada National Guard platoon leader Kim Garback, who also happens to be the director Reno's Chick Fil A restaurant. Their purpose? Kim told me, “So that we could give back to our medical workers on the front lines.”

Kim's very first day on the job was Monday, which just happened to be the day Chick Fil A's dining rooms in Reno and Sparks, shut down: “I definitely didn't expect it, but you know it's just another way to jump in with both feet and tackle challenges that are facing Reno right now.”

RENO, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — Layoffs as a result of the coronavirus crisis have already hit the northern Nevada economy, with one Reno casino expecting to fire at least 150 workers this week.

A recent poll from NPR/PBS News Hour/Marist showed nearly 1 in 5 ‘households experiencing a layoff or a reduction in work hours.' Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin warned the unemployment rate could skyrocket to nearly 20 percent without a significant rescue of the economy.
